Indian Institute of Heritage and University of Birmingham announce strategic partnership

The University of Birmingham and the Indian Institute of Heritage are joining hands  to create new opportunities in the fields of Heritage, Museums and Museology. The two institutions signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore a strategic partnership that will create impactful collaborations in the field of education and research. The partnership will help students and experts from both institutes to participate in research projects as well as drive student exchange programmes between academics.

“The University of Birmingham is a global ‘civic’ university, and we are committed to forging meaningful education and research partnerships in India. Indian students occupy an important place in our global student community and our commitment to the country as a strategic partner. This partnership with the Indian Institute of Heritage allows both institutions to build on our undoubted strengths across heritage, museums, and museology – creating opportunities for students and staff in both India and the UK,” said Professor Adam Tickell, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Birmingham.

The University of Birmingham is renowned for its proficiency in heritage research, and its International Centre for Heritage stands as a global pioneer in adopting sustainable and innovative methods for heritage management practices and future strategies. The postgraduate programs offered by the Centre equip students with the necessary skills for pursuing careers in heritage, with numerous alumni holding prominent positions in museums and conservation agencies.

The University has established meaningful collaborations in India, supported by its India Institute, which seeks to enhance Birmingham's presence, influence, and coherence in its involvement in the country.

The Indian Institute of Heritage is a prominent cultural institution in India. It conducts research on India's diverse heritage and provides outstanding educational opportunities that make significant contributions to the cultural, scientific, and economic aspects of India. The institute offers M.A. and Ph.D. programs in various disciplines, including Museology, History of Art, Conservation, Archaeology, Paleography, Epigraphy, and Numismatics. These programs are enriched through close collaboration with the National Museum in New Delhi, involving engagement with galleries, exhibitions, storage and reserve collections, and the conservation laboratory.

US Calling!

The spiralling cut-offs required for admission by domestic universities have led to an increase in students considering higher education abroad.  The United States continues to be one of the top education destinations for Indian students. In a recent interview, US Consul General Jennifer A. McIntyre of the US Consulate at Chennai revealed that Indian students made up for 12 per cent of the total foreign students studying in the US, the second largest cohort after China. “Close to one lakh Indian students are studying in higher education institutions in the US today and there has been an increase in the number.”
The International Knowledge Center, set up by GenNext Education Inc, acts as a bridge between US universities and Indian students. The Center has agreements with different universities for student admissions, student exchange and faculty development programmes. Gen Next Education, Inc. was started by Girish Ballolla who saw the need to help US universities internationalize their campuses and graduate global citizens prepared to function in this highly global economy.

Ballola was born and raised in India before moving to the US to pursue a higher education and understands first-hand, the challenges students face in identifying and applying to universities in the US.  He is also experienced in the challenges associated with recruiting the “right-fit” international students. His keen interest in helping US universities internationalize their campus and help them develop an international presence led to the creation of the International Knowledge Center.

Gen Next is organizing a series of events featuring prominent US universities later this month. The events will be held in different cities across India. Universities include University of Kansas, University of Minnesota, University of Denver, Kansas State University, University of Wisconsin Stevens Point, Indiana University, and Embry Riddle Aeronautical University.

Thomas Cook launches University Tours

Travel company Thomas Cook has launched University Tours in collaboration with education consultancy firm The Red Pen College Tours in the United States. The Tours will take Indian students on a tour of select colleges and universities in the US to help them decide where they want to pursue their higher studies.

Students will be taken to campuses of leading universities such as Stanford University, University of California - Los Angeles, Harvard University, New York University and Princeton University.

According to a release from Thomas Cook, traditional route of online research and word-of-mouth has fallen short of providing Indian students and their parents a realistic and hands on perspective.

The University Tours are expected to give prospective students and their parents a glimpse into university life experiences with visits to the US colleges, interactions with students and university admission advisors.

The tour operators promise customized sessions and workshops at some universities, a pre-departure workshop on the US university admission process and on how to select a university for parents and students, workshops to guide students on how to select majors and careers, how to prepare resumes and individual counselling after the trip.

According to the release, Shibani Phadkar, senior vice-president and head, Leisure Travel (Outbound) Products of Thomas Cook (India), says: "This initiative is aimed at giving students a vibrant firsthand perspective of what to expect when pursuing their undergraduate studies in America. On-ground counselling and interactions with local students and counsellors make for engaging sessions while ensuring selection of an apt university."

Study in Latvia centre opens in Chennai

Latvia is the newest name in a growing list of foreign study destinations for Indian students. A conglomerate of seven Latvian universities launched a "Study in Latvia Centre (SLC)" in Chennai last week.

According to Professor Leonids Ribickis, the Rector of Riga Technical University, Latvia offered "vast education opportunities and international exposure." Imants Bergs, Vice-Rector in Turiba University said that a cooperation agreement between the Governments of Latvia and India enabled mutual recognition of issued qualifications, besides allowing Indian students to apply for Latvian government scholarships.

Internationalisation on the table

While internationalisation is the newest buzz word in academic circles around the world, education institutions face different challenges when trying to make their mark in the globalised world.

Institutions in the South Asian region have similar opportunities and challenges but there is currently no regional initiative at the higher education level that focuses on collaboration. There are very few examples of institutions sharing their experiences with each other on how they are meeting the demographic challenge; what is working; what is failing and working together to do what needs to be done.

Britain’s Anglia Ruskin University hosted a round table in Delhi recently to discuss “Internationalisation and its impact on student experiences.” The initiative was part of the British university’s continued focus and commitment to South Asia.

Policy makers and senior academics from universities in the Asian sub continent (India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh) participated in the discussion, which ended up as a lively, interactive exchange of ideas and strategies that would help participating varsities collaborate with each other and promote internationalisation at their campuses.

Participants included Professor Michael Thorne, Vice Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University; Professor K S Rangappa, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore; Dr Rajan Welukar, Vice-Chancellor, University of Mumbai; Dr G James Pitchai, Vice-Chancellor, Bharathiar University; Professor Erinjery Joseph James, Karunya University; Major General Milinda Peiris, General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, Colombo; Professor Abdus Sattar, NorthSouthUniversity, Bangladesh; Professor Rahman, Daffodil International University, Bangladesh; Dr Prem Nair, Amrita University; Dr Dhrubajyoti Chattopadhyay, Pro Vice Chancellor, Calcutta University; Professor SH Pawar, Vice-Chancellor, DY Patil University, Kolhapur; and Sangeet Jaura, Associate Vice President, Chitkara University.

In India for instance, collaboration between universities and education institutions for research, teacher mobility, student mobility for research, joint degrees, and academic exchanges through partnerships and collaboration is prominent on the Government’s agenda. Indian universities are promoting research collaborations with foreign universities and this trend is going to continue to grow in the future. The Indian Government has been prioritising resources in favour of joint research collaborations and has increased allocations to research councils.

However India hasn’t had much of a success in the race to be an education hub unlike Singapore, Malaysia and Dubai. Sri Lanka on the other hand has a focused plan to attract foreign investment in the higher education sector – an initiative
which has strong government support.

With the participating universities promising to work with each other at the round table, their internationalisation strategies and efforts should get the much-needed shot in the arm.

According to Anglia Ruskin academics, progress from the round table will be monitored and reviewed for the next one to be held in 2014.

University College Dublin scholarships for Indian students

The University announces €250,000 Scholarship Fund to attract top Indian students

A leading European research-intensive university, University College Dublin (UCD), has announced a range of scholarships to attract top Indian students to its university. Valued at €250,000 the scholarship fund will be used to attract top applicants to postgraduate and undergraduate programmes commencing in September 2013. Amongst the scholarships (available only to Indian applicants) announced were 2 full tuition scholarships at graduate level, five 50% tuition scholarships for taught masters programmes and over 50 scholarships of €2,000.
At undergraduate level, UCD have also shown a commitment to Indian students by offering scholarships valued between 50% of the full tuition fee and €2,500. Speaking on behalf of UCD, Ms. Una Condron, the International Recruitment Manager for India said: “We remain extremely committed to India and have a very attractive range of postgraduate programmes in engineering, finance, biotechnology and computer science (to name just a few) in response to the demand we have identified by industry employers.  These scholarships, which are specific to Indian applicants, seek to attract top Indian applicants by making their studies at UCD as affordable as possible."

UCD is ranked in the top 1% of World Universities per 2012 QS Rankings (ranking 130). Established in 1854, UCD is one of the oldest universities in Ireland and is Ireland's largest and most international university (with over 25,000 students of which over 5,500 are international from over 122 countries around the world). This combined with its status as Ireland's leader in postgraduate education (over a quarter of all graduate students in Ireland study in UCD) has proven it to be the most popular university for Indian students looking to study at university level in Ireland.

Located in Dublin city, Ireland's capital, UCD has Indians studying at undergraduate and graduate level. School of Communication set up by Shiv Nadar University and US university


The Shiv Nadar University (SNU) today announced the launch of the School of Communication (SoC) offering undergraduate, graduate and research level programs in communication. The University also announced a new collaboration with the Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Pennsylvania (ASC) through which ASC will assist SNU in designing the curriculum for its programs along with assisting SNU in identification and training of faculty. The partnership also established both faculty and student exchange programs. Students and faculty from both institutions will have the option of spending up to two semesters at Pennsylvania campus or at the SNU campus at Greater Noida.

Nikhil Sinha, Vice Chancellor, Shiv Nadar University said, ‘The growth of communication and media in India has been exponential and India increasingly requires globally relevant research-led programs in communication. Shiv Nadar University launches dual degree in engineering with Carnegie Mellon University


The Shiv Nadar University today announced the launch of the  Carnegie Mellon Shiv Nadar Program in Electrical & Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering in partnership with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).

These four-year undergraduate engineering degree programs will award students dual degrees – a Bachelor of Technology from Shiv Nadar University and a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University

Launched as part of the program offerings of  SNU’s School of Engineering and CMU’s College of Engineering, the Shiv Nadar Carnegie Mellon Program will commence in August 2013. Students will spend the first and third year of the Program at the SNU campus in Greater Noida and the second and fourth year at CMU’s Pittsburgh Pennsylvania campus, with opportunities to undertake summer internships in  both the US and India.

The program’s integrated curriculum and the periods in India and the US will expose students to a unique bi-national experience that will prepare them to succeed in an  increasingly globalized working environment.

Admissions to the program will commence in Spring 2013 (February 2013) and applicants will need to meet both SNU and CMU’s admissions criteria, including taking the SAT and TOEFL.

Dual degrees with world's top 500 varsities

In a move to regulate the country's higher education sector,  the University Grants Commission has approved new regulations governing foreign university partnerships, barring entry to all but the top 500 globally-ranked universities. In order to be eligible to offer joint degrees or other twinning programmes, foreign universities must be listed among the top 500 in the Times Higher Education or Shanghai Jiaotong University world rankings, while Indian universities must have received the highest grade from the National Assessmentand Accreditation Council or the National Board of AccreditationUniversities with existing partnerships will be allowed six months to comply with the new regulations, or face penalties.
While the government’s move to regulate partnerships by allowing access to elite institutions should be lauded, there are many non-elite institutions worldwide that offer a diverse range of high-quality programmes. The new regulations would deprive Indian students from accessing those programmes.

Trinity College Dublin plans big for India

Professor Jane Ohlmeyer, VP of Global Relations at Trinity College Dublin, one of Ireland’s oldest universities was recently in New Delhi as part of the university’s ongoing deepening engagement with India. Apart from being at the cutting edge of research, technology and innovation, Trinity recently has had Bollywood on campus with the filming of Ek Tha Tiger. Jane Ohlmeyer spoke to me at length about the university’s plans for India.

Debeshi: Can you elaborate on why you are visiting New Delhi

Jane: We are visiting to do a number of things: to raise the visibility of Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin in India; to nurture high level collaborations with leading Indian universities; and to promote our postgraduate and undergraduate courses to prospective Indian students.

Debeshi: What are Trinity College Dublin's plans for India?

Jane: Trinity has extensive research collaborations in India.  Here are a few examples.

Civil Engineering: A scholarship scheme for the exchange of students of taught Masters courses and research collaboration between consortium members has been developed by the Department of Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin and a number of Institutes of Technology, National Institutes of Technology and universities in northern India.

Trinity’s Adjunct Professor Ravindra Dhir and Associate Professor Roger West, of TrinityHaus, the Michael McNamara Centre for Construction Innovation and Sustainability at Trinity, have  developed the initiatives:

The Ireland-Indian Initiative in Civil Engineering (I3CE@TCD) sets out to foster links between Trinity and a select number of high level Indian academic institutions to facilitate the exchange of staff and postgraduate students in the delivery of the MSc/MTech taught course programmes. It will allow Indian or Irish students to spend one year in the partner institution with full credit towards their degree.  Indian students from partner institutions who are accepted to attend for an academic year in Trinity will be awarded a scholarship.  Dissertations will be co-supervised with a corresponding academic in the partner institution.

As part of this process, Memoranda of Understanding have just been signed between Trinity College and the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi and Thapar University,Patiala. MTech Internship students are currently in Trinity College Dublin researching composite bamboo columns for structural use, in collaboration with Professor Suresh Bhalla of IIT Delhi, supported by the Faculty of Engineering, Mathematics and Science at Trinity.

The Ireland-India Concrete Research Initiative (IICRI), is developing collaborations in research with such partner institutions, including joint funding and supervision of PhD students. There is a significant challenge for both countries in developing more sustainable concrete, essential to infrastructural, commercial and domestic building projects. The use of greener alternative cements in concrete leads to changes in the durability characteristics which have relevance for both life-cycle costings and the carbon footprint associated with infrastructural development. The consortium of Civil Engineering at Trinity and its Indian partners aim to share expertise, knowledge, resources and facilities in order to disseminate the necessary innovations to allow Irish and Indian engineers to take advantage of more sustainable concrete materials with confidence in the future.

Trinity College Dublin’s Professor of Experimental Brain Research, Shane O’Mara recently visited the National Institute for Mental Health and Neuroscience, NIMHANS, in Bangalore, in order to teach in a Department of Science and Technology (India) sponsored school in the Neurobiology of Learning and Memory. A competition was held to bring students from all over India to participate in a special teaching programme involving faculty from all over India, and from the USA and Ireland.

The school was organised jointly by Professor of Neurogenetics, Mani Ramaswami for Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin, and Professor B S Shankaranarayana.  Twenty-five students were selected for the programme, coming to Bangalore from as far afield as New Delhi, Bhopal, Calcutta and other locations. Professor O’Mara taught on two topics: a) the functions of the hippocampal formation in learning, memory and amnesia, and b) the neural coding of memories by ensemble activity in the brain.

In addition to his teaching at NIMHANS, Professor O’Mara also visited Professor Shona Chatterji, at the National Centre for Biotechnological Sciences, NCBS with whom he has established a Science Foundation Ireland-funded research programme. A research student will visit Professor O’Mara’s laboratory for six months during the course of 2012 to avail of advanced training in the use of the TCIN 7T magnetic resonance imaging system. An exciting experimental programme has been devised and joint publications between TCIN and NCBS are expected.

Trinity College Dublin, the University of Dublin’s arts and humanities research institute, the Trinity Long Room Hub, has a Memorandum of Understanding with the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Advanced Student (JNIAS), Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), New Delhi. It facilitates a bilateral exchange programme whereby two fellows from each institution annually spends up to three months in the partner institution.  There they contribute to the research environment of the host, via research presentations and one-on-one meetings, and carry out their own research. Scholars named to the programme for 2012 are Professor Eunan O'Halpin (TCD), Peter Arnds (TCD) and Jyoti Atwal (JNU). 

In the first instance, the programme is focused on the arts and humanities, but scholars outside of these agreements can be facilitated by agreement between the institutions. 
 
Debeshi: How many international students are there on campus? How many of these are from India?

Jane: Today it has a vibrant community of 17,000 students representing 122 nationalities, and a wide range of social backgrounds, age-groups and cultures.  About 10% of our students are from non-EU countries, including India. We have 140 Indian students at Trinity, 45 of whom are undergraduates and the rest are postgraduates.  These students are studying a wide range of subjects: Engineering, English Literature, Economics, Computer Science, Medicine, Business and Medicine.   We are keen to increase the number of Indian students studying at Trinity and in August will advertise scholarships for postgraduate and undergraduate study.

Jane: The Bollywood film, Ek Ta Tiger, which stars Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif was filmed in Trinity in September 2011 and has a Trinity story line.  The film will be launched on 15 August 2012 and we plan a range of activities in Delhi and other Indian cities around the time of the launch.

Students and academic researchers are not permanent migrants: Universities UK

The British government’s immigration policies aimed at preventing student visa abuse at bogus colleges has resulted in decreasing numbers of foreign students, particularly those from countries such as India, Pakistan and China. The country’s higher education sector has been voicing concerns about the long-terms effects of the government’s strict visa regime on a market that is now worth in excess of £5 billion.

At a recent debate organized by higher education action group, Universities UK, university chiefs were unanimous about the fact that the image of Britain as a leading international education destination had taken a beating in the light of the government’s visa regulations.

Professor Eric Thomas, President, Universities UK said: “Migration is a significant issue and we are behind the government in stopping student visa abuse. However, there is clearly a conflict between government policy and the higher education sector’s ability to compete in the international market.” Thomas revealed that while UK’s market share in the international education market dropped from 10.8 per cent in 2000 to 9.9 per cent in 2009, biggest competitors have increased their market share. He also added that there have been reductions in student numbers from the Indian subcontinent.

“Students and academic researchers are not permanent migrants,” stated Thomas. “They come here to study and then, by and large, they leave.”

Professor Julia King, Vice-Chancellor, Aston University revealed that the University had witnessed a 39 per cent decline in applications from India. Birmingham’s local economy (food, clothing and entertainment) had also suffered a loss in revenues. King added that with a change in the post-study work visa regulations, graduates in disciplines such as pharmacy, engineering and business had been affected severely.

Glyn Williams, Head of Migration Policy, Home Office defended his government saying that “student migration is here with us and here to stay and no government is going to ignore that.”

“The more we debate, the more the adverse effect of the government policy will reverberate throughout the world,” Williams added.
Keith Vaz: crusader?

Rt.Hon Keith Vaz MP, Chairman of the Home Affairs Select Committee, focused on how public perception of Britain as a popular overseas education destination in important student markets such as India had taken a beating, especially with the recent deaths and Indian media’s attention on these tragic events. Vaz pointed out that Britain was being viewed as an unwelcoming place and many Indian middle-class families, who could afford an overseas education, were choosing to send their children to countries such as the United States instead.

Vaz was openly critical of the UK Border Agency (UKBA), border control agency of the British Government. He appealed to university representatives to lobby with the Foreign Office, the Government’s Business Department and No 10 rather than the Home Office. “These departments understand the benefits that foreign students bring to our economy,” added Vaz, himself a first generation immigrant. Vaz was born in Yemen from parents born in India.

University of Plymouth partners with Kaziranga University

Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 2012, the University of Plymouth is another prominent British institution expanding its footprint in India.

Bill Rammell, Deputy Vice-Chancellor, University of Plymouth along with a delegation comprising Peter Ingram, Head of International Office and Professor Sanjay Sharma visited India in February 2012 to explore the possibility of collaborating with Indian varsities.

A memorandum of understanding has already been signed between Kaziranga University in Assam and the University of Plymouth. The agreement will open the doors for the sharing of learning resources, faculty resources. This will have long-term implications in terms of placements of Indian students in international markets and pave the way for development, research collaborations, and faculty and student exchange programmes.

A delegation from the institution will hold series of meetings with officials in India and work in areas of curriculum development, curriculum implementation and its assessment.

Kaziranga University coupled with Plymouth University’s expertise in areas including robotics, engineering, computing and environmental sciences will converge the three themes shaping the future of education, namely education and society, education and learning science, and education and learning tools, to form a new learning framework through their School of Management Studies and the School of Engineering. 

“Together with a research-informed curriculum, we embed employability skills throughout a student's journey altogether. More such agreements are expected to be signed in the near future,” said Rammell, adding that his university was excited to have collaborated with Kaziranga University. He said Assam was famous for having the highest population of the one–horned rhino and it would be a noble effort to save such a rare animal by creating awareness through global educational ventures.

Vilas M Salokhe, Vice–Chancellor of Kaziranga University said the university would start its academic session with courses in engineering and management. “The university aspires to become the centre of excellence for teaching and research by embracing diverse branches of learning such as health sciences, agriculture, environment, IT and allied subjects. Students will find ample opportunities to get an exposure to the best institutes and corporate houses in the country and abroad, “ Salokhe explained.

Rammell said there was an inherent link between higher education and economic growth and thus it was vital that universities delivered innovative and enterprising education to produce graduates who would thrive in the global market.

La Trobe University to collaborate on research and development of leading-edge technologies in India

Australia’s La Trobe University is strengthening its presence in India.

The university has signed agreements with three Indian companies and institutions - global technology firm HCL, electric vehicle manufacturer Mahindra Reva in Bengaluru, and Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, Rajasthan.

The agreements focus on innovation, new product development and realisation, industry collaboration, commercialisation of intellectual property and institutional links.

The La Trobe University delegation was part of the Victoria Super Trade Mission, which was visiting India from 20 to 26 February. 2012. The mission was led by the Victorian Premier, Ted Baillieu.  More than 100 Victorian companies participated in the trade mission.

Professor John Dewar, newly appointed Vice-Chancellor and President of La Trobe University is accompanied by Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President, Professor John Rosenberg, and senior delegates from La Trobe University.

Professor Dewar says: “La Trobe University is taking a number of significant initiatives during this mission to further enhance its presence in India. We are committed to our relationship with India and look forward to building increasingly strong research and educational collaborations with Indian companies and institutions, and welcoming more Indian students to our campuses in Australia.’

Professor Dewar explained that the alliance with HCL involves collaboration on research and development of leading-edge technology for Intelligent Transport Systems. It deals with traffic and infrastructure management, security, enhanced driver safety and logistics support for transport operations. It also involves recruitment by the company of La Trobe University graduates.

Professor Dewar will also sign a higher education exchange and co-operation agreement for research and teaching with the Birla Institute of Technology and Science in Pilani, Rajasthan. The La Trobe University delegation will travel to Bengaluru to sign a MOU with Mahindra Reva for joint research and development of an advanced ‘green’ energy management system at the company’s new electric vehicle plant in Bengaluru.


Technologies for both these systems were developed by La Trobe University’s Centre for Technology Infusion in Australia. They have already been installed, respectively, in a hundred cars for a major road and rail safety traffic research project in the southern Australian State of Victoria, and in Australia’s first Zero Emission House, built last year by the government peak science research body, CSIRO and private industry.

Irish universities in India: focus on internationalisation

Irish Universities Association, the representative body for Ireland’s universities, hosted an education fair for students at The Lalit in New Delhi on Saturday 11 February 2012. The fair, which featured a consortium of seven leading institutes --  University of Limerick; National University of Ireland, Galway; National University of Ireland, Maynooth; Dublin City University; University College Cork; University of Dublin Trinity College; and University College Dublin --  toured Chennai, Hyderabad and Bangalore before ending their promotional tour at Delhi.

I visited the fair and spoke to Sinead Lucey, International Marketing Manager, Irish Universities Association (IUA) on higher education in Ireland and the IUA’s blueprint for India:

Debeshi: Tell us about what Ireland has on offer in terms of higher education?

Sinead: Our focus is on high quality education, a commitment to excellence. The quest for excellence is the bedrock of the seven Irish universities. Irish universities are internationally recognized for quality in education, research and the overall student experience, a recognition they relentlessly strive to enhance. International students are fundamental to this objective.

Debeshi: Can you elaborate on the programmes that these universities offer?

Sinead: Alongside the traditional postgraduate courses, there is a diverse range of postgraduate courses ranging from Meteorology, Creative Writing to Biomedical Engineering. Pharmaceuticals, Information Technology, Medical Devices, Biotechnology are some of the other popular disciplines. The Pharmaceutical and Information Technology industry in Ireland is doing well and there are job opportunities for students.

Debeshi: Tell us about scholarships available for higher studies in Ireland?

Sinead: Almost all the universities offer some form of financial aid to international students. In addition, the government is offering a fully-funded scholarship which includes full tuition fee waiver and a stipend of 10,000 euros.

Debeshi: Are students allowed to work in Ireland after their course is completed?

Sinead: Students are allowed to stay back for a year and gain work experience after their course is completed. Leading global companies are located in Ireland. Companies who require a skilled, educated and highly capable workforce to drive their success choose to locate in Ireland. Recently, Ireland has welcomed Google, Facebook, Pfizer, Apple, Intel to name just a few  - all of whom chose Ireland as their European base. Global work experience helps graduates find their feet easily enough when they return to India.

Debeshi: Given recent incidents, Indian students will want to make sure they are safe in a foreign environment. Tell us how Ireland scores on this front?
